Let’s make a street people choose to walk and cycle along.

A street people want to use to get from A to B day and night because it feels safe, there are places to rest and meet people.

  • There is only one place on the street to stop and rest and watch the world go by. We know putting benches and seats outside create opportunities for people to meet each other.

13000 cars and vans use the street every day, this affects how cyclists and pedestrians use the street as well as affects the air quality and noise.

In a recent safety survey Union Street and Stonehouse ranked as the top two unsafest places in Plymouth and young people have told us they don’t feel safe at night or in winter.

The street can be dominated by antisocial behaviour and people that need support - whilst addressing this is important alongside that we can improve the experience on the street for other people in our community too.

  • The street prioritises people walking and cycling - this could be crossings, lighting, seating and signage that is joyful, links to the streets past and creates spaces fit for the future.

The street picks up on the feel of Street Party days - where people spend time, gather and connect.

We make a street with high footfall and low pollution that supports peoples health and wellbeing.

We connect the street into the city around it - connecting to the water, the city centre and Devonport.

The street is known as a safe space to be - the crime rates drop and we see more cyclists and people spending time on the street.

These are some of the actions that could make that happen…
