A street made for walking
Let’s make a street people really want to walk and cycle along. A street where people want to stop and feel safe to spend time during the day and night, and we make great use of public spaces.
Why is this important?
There is only one permanent place to sit along the street to take a rest or watch the world go by.
More than 13000 cars and lorries use the road every day. It makes it feel dangerous for children and cyclists.
The road is noisy and impacts air quality for a community with high levels of long term health conditions.
Surveys have shown that people don’t feel safe walking along the street especially at night and in winter.
The street can be dominated by people with behaviours that are anti-social and are not accessing the help they need.
Imagine if…
The street prioritised people walking and cycling more than cars. With crossings, lighting, seating and signage that is joyful, colourful and celebrates the past and what makes the community unique.
There is really high footfall that makes the street feel safer in the day and night, business more successful and there are places you can stop and chat to people you bump into.
Our community connected better to the water (it is 5 minutes away!) and we felt more connected to events happening in the city so local people accessed the opportunities it has to offer.
The street becomes a demonstration of a healthy and inclusive high street - reducing pollution and noise levels, creating activity and uses that reflect the community and more green plants and trees grow along the road.
What actions could happen…
